This Wednesday, Sept. 25, the Labor Department’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service
will host a Twitter chat from 3-4 p.m. EDT on education as a pathway to
employment for veterans and returning service members. Join the conversation
using the hashtag #VetsJobsChat.
As
the new academic year begins, there is a growing demographic on many college
campuses across the country: student veterans. Enrolling in educational programs
is a great way for service men and women to enhance military skillsets and
become more competitive in the civilian job market. According to the Department of Veterans
Affairs, educational benefit programs like the Montgomery GI Bill and the
Post-9/11 GI Bill served more than 900,000 people in 2011 alone.
To help you successfully navigate your way out of
the military and into a good job, other government partners and veterans service
organizations will join the chat to share tips and help answer questions.
Together with Veterans Affairs, the Student Veterans of America, the Consumer
Financial Protection Bureau and others, we’ll cover the following topics:
- How to outline career goals and file for educational benefits.
- Strategies for success while enrolled in an educational program, as well as for transitioning (post-education) to a career.
- What career resources and tools are available, and how to access them.
