US DOL announces availability of $421 million through YouthBuild and Senior Community Service Employment Program Grants

On March 7, Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis today announced the availability of approximately $75 million in YouthBuild grant funds to develop programs that will help out-of-school youth complete high school or General Educational Development programs, as well as learn critical occupational skills in construction, health care, information technology and other fields.

Similarly, on March 8 the U.S. Department of Labor today announced the availability of $346 million in grants through the Senior Community Service Employment Program to provide community service-based job training opportunities for unemployed older Americans.

"The YouthBuild programs that will be funded through this grant competition will help provide youth at risk of falling through the cracks with the opportunity to develop not only the jobs skills they need, but also the leadership qualities that will enable them to be valuable, productive members of their communities," said Secretary Solis.

"The [senior] job training programs funded through these grants will enhance employment opportunities for seniors through training while also linking them with businesses that are looking for qualified employees," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis.

The solicitation for grant applications will be published in the Federal Register; YouthBuild the March 8 edition, and Senior Community Service Employment program the March 9 edition.
